The Coaching course for Masters and how we went

The Coaching course for Masters and how we went

Who would have thought that a weekend of coaching development spent at QSAC would yield such insight into the technical aspects of a range of track and field events. But that’s exactly how it panned out in July 2026 when over 20 masters athletes and coaches joined Australian Athletics staff for the Level 2 Development Coach Course for Masters Athletes.

Aimed primarily at masters athletes coaching other masters athletes, this pilot program provided great insight into all the scaffolding built around the athlete for them to reach their best version on competition day.

A combination of theory and practical assessment overseen by prominent and experienced coaches covered off the elements of coaching long and triple jump, high jump, hurdles, sprints, discus, shot and javelin.

It was in the execution of the practical training where technical breakdown and knowledge transfer provided the most valuable insight. Tutors giving candidates the understanding and appreciation of correct technique from a biomechanics and performance context.

Back in the classroom it was theory around programming and case studies centred on coaching athletes. Small groups were given real life relevant scenarios of, for instance, a new masters athlete wanting to compete. Analysis and discussion covered everything from the athlete’s medical, sporting and injury history to their goals, work schedule, training and conditioning commitment, sleep quality and nutrition.

Whether participants want to coach youth or other masters athletes or simply invest that new knowledge to become a better masters athlete themselves, the L2 Development Course for Masters Athletes had something for everyone. A final written assessment around programming concluded the weekend’s training. The L2 Development Coaching course was well balanced and delivered in the right environment for success. And with that it is highly recommended for all interested masters athletes.

Christmas in July Throws 2026

Christmas in July Throws 2026

Christmas in July Throws was back for another year, over two beautiful winter days in Brisbane. Athletes from around Queensland and interstate came together to compete in this throws-exclusive competition, including the State Championship for super weight, 50lb, 100lb, and heavy weight pentathlon.

Well done to all those who threw at the events for Christmas in July Throws. People came from all over Queensland and interstate to enjoy the company and competition.

Background for those who did not take part: this 2-day competition includes single events for javelin, discus, shot put, hammer, weight throw, super weight, 50lb and 100lb weight throws plus a throws pentathlon, and a heavy weight pentathlon. If you take part in everything, it is possible to get in 78 competition throws across the weekend. Adding in warm-ups, it equals a challenging weekend for our throwers. Monday was definitely a rest day!

This year the super weight, 50lb, 100lb, and heavy weight pentathlon were State Championship events. Well done to our new State Champs!

Thank you to all those that took time out of their weekend to help our throwers by officiating and helping at events. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. It was great to see so many of our running, jumping and committee members giving time to make this event successful. We’re sure the throwers will return the favour by helping on the track during the season.

And thanks again to Jo for the fabulous photos. There are three (Links: 1, 2, 3) whole albums worth of throws on her Facebook group. Shannon also grabbed some test footage for the new website, but she doesn't have Jo's magic trick of making the cage disappear.

Distances are up on our results page.
